1. Look for the Absence of Real “Voice” and Nuance
AI can mimic styles, but it struggles with genuine voice. A human writer, especially one dedicated to ghostwriting, will immerse themselves in your personality, your inflections, your unique way of seeing the world. AI often produces:
- A “Flat” or Generic Tone: It might be grammatically perfect, but it lacks the subtle wit, the specific turns of phrase, the personal quirks that make human conversation (and thus, good writing) engaging.
- Lack of Deep Emotional Resonance: AI can describe emotions, but it can’t feel them. This often results in descriptions that are technically correct but don’t quite hit the emotional mark, lacking the raw vulnerability or profound insight that comes from lived experience.
- Predictable Patterns: AI is built on patterns. You might notice repetitive sentence structures, a predictable flow of arguments, or an overuse of certain transition words (e.g., “furthermore,” “moreover,” “however” used too frequently or unnaturally) that give it away.
2. Watch for the Lack of “Show, Don’t Tell”
Great human writing “shows” you a scene or feeling rather than just “telling” you about it. AI, while improving, can still lean heavily on telling.
- Vague Details: Instead of vivid, specific anecdotes that make a story come alive, AI might offer more generalized descriptions.
- Superficiality: A truly human story delves beneath the surface. It explores contradictions, internal conflicts, and the messy realities of life. AI often provides a clean, sanitized, or overly logical narrative that lacks this depth.
- Unusual or Illogical Metaphors/Similes: While AI can generate figurative language, it sometimes produces comparisons that don’t quite land or feel out of place because it lacks true understanding of the underlying human experience.
3. Listen for the Absence of Organic Discovery
A human ghostwriting process is dynamic. You might start with an outline, but during interviews or the rough draft stage, new memories surface, unexpected connections are made, and the story evolves organically.
- Rigidity: AI-generated content can feel rigid, as if it’s following a pre-programmed script without the flexibility to capture spontaneous insights or unexpected tangents that make your story unique.
- Lack of True Curiosity: A human interviewer listens not just to what you say, but how you say it, what you don’t say, and the emotions behind your words. AI, by its nature, processes inputs, but it doesn’t possess genuine curiosity or the ability to truly read between the lines.
4. The “Hallucination” Factor
While less common with highly refined prompts, AI can sometimes “hallucinate” information, creating facts or details that aren’t true. A human ghostwriter will constantly fact-check and verify details with you, ensuring the authenticity of your narrative.
5. AI Detection Tools Aren’t Foolproof (Yet)
While AI detection software exists, it’s constantly evolving, and so are the methods to bypass it. Relying solely on these tools is risky. The best “detector” is a keen human eye and a deep understanding of what makes writing authentically human.
